Back to School Information
We had an amazing summer with the children, and we are looking forward to an equally amazing school year! Here's what you need to know about the new school year:
First Day of School at First Discoveries
The first day of school for our Preschool, VPK/PreK and Kindergarten/Primary classes is on Thursday, August 15th. Classes begin at 8:00 or 8:15 depending on the schedule you selected for your child (early drop off begins at 7:00). The school supply list and the school year calendar are both listed above. See below for Open House and for Stay and Play visits.
Afterschool for Local Elementary Schools:
Hillsborough County Public Schools are going back to school on Monday, August 12th. The bell schedule is the same as last year (except for a few less early release days), and school starts at 7:40 am, with drop off beginning approximately 30 minutes before that. Because school starts so early, we will not be dropping off before school. We will be picking up from Brooker and Cimino Elementary Schools when schools dismiss at 1:55 pm (12:55 pm on early release days).
If you are signed up for afterschool care at First Discoveries, please confirm if you have any changes to your schedule as we are finalizing our bus rosters. Remember to let the elementary school know that First Discoveries will be picking up your child. We recommend having us pick up your child on the first day of school to prevent confusions at the school the first week.
Please remember that you need to send a Brightwheel message by noon each day if we are not picking up your child at the elementary school.
Stay and Play Visits:
If your child is preregistered for the upcoming school year, you are encouraged to schedule a Stay and Play visit before the first day of school. The visit is usually about 60 to 90 minutes, allowing your child to become comfortable in their new classroom with their new teacher.
We are scheduling Stay and Play visits for new preschool and VPK students on Wednesday, August 7th and on Thursday, August 8th, from 9:45 am to 11:45 pm. Please email if you would like to attend either day. You are welcome to stay with your child or drop your child off (as long as we have a completed enrollment packet on file so we have emergency contact information).
Our Open House for Preschool, PreK/VPK and Kindergarten/Primary will be
Tuesday, August 13th, 2019
Preschool & PreK/VPK Open House: 5:00 to 5:30 PM
Kindergarten-Primary: 5:45 PM to 6:15 PM
If you have children enrolled in more than one program, you will only need to attend one Open House Session. We will share important information about the upcoming school year, so please plan to attend. All classrooms will close at 4:00 pm to allow the teachers to prepare for Open House. We recommend that families bring their school supplies to Open House, and don't forget to purchase a t-shirt for the new school year if you don't already have one! We wear our school shirts on Wednesdays and also on all field trips.
Semi-Annual Supply/Registration Fee:
Please remember that the semi-annual supply/registration fee of $100 is due on August 1st and on January 1st. Half of the fee is used for insurance costs for the school, and the remaining funds are used to replace/purchase consumable supplies for the school, including art supplies (paint, construction paper, etc.), puzzles, and other materials. A child enrolled in the kindergarten / primary class will also have a $300 book fee due in August (may be covered by scholarships) for books and curriculum materials.
School Dress Code:
We encourage families to adhere to a simple dress code: Children should come to school in comfortable clothes that allow them to participate in messy, busy explorations. Please wear tennis shoes rather than crocs or sandals. Girls must always wear shorts under their dresses/skirts. We will wear our school shirts on Wednesdays and all field trips. School shirts are available for $10 each (order form available in the lobby). We will be selling t-shirts at Open House.
Parking for Families
Our school has grown so much, which is very exciting! To prevent families from being blocked in the driveway, we ask families to follow our parking policy. Our teachers park in the grassy lot at the back of the property, leaving 4 or 5 parking spaces available for parents at the front of the building. If you will be spending more than a few minutes inside the building, please park in a parking space. If there are no parking spaces available, you are welcome to park in front of the dumpster or on the grass on our property. Please do not park in our neighbors' yard. You may park in the driveway if you are dropping off or picking up from the lobby. If you are walking your child to class, be sure to park rather than leave your vehicle in the driveway. Also, to prevent air pollution please turn off your engine rather than idling engines in the driveway! For safety reasons, children may never be left unattended in vehicles.
Parent Communication App
If you haven't done so yet, be sure to download the Brightwheel app and login with the email you supplied to the school. You will need your access code to sign your child in and out on the tablet in the lobby. The app will also allow you to receive messages from the school and from your child's teacher. All families are required to have access to Brightwheel either on your mobile device (phone or tablet) or on the website.
Be sure to watch for the first day of school pictures on Brightwheel!
Children must arrive at school no later than 8:20 am so that they can participate in all of our morning routines. Children may only arrive after 8:20 am if they had a doctor's appointment that morning (note from the doctor's office is required) and if they notified the school in advance.
See You Soon!
We are looking forward to an amazing school year!
If you have any questions or concerns, please let Ms. Jennifer or Ms. Cindy know!
